God’s Building Materials
When God builds, He uses specific "materials" to shape His work. These materials are not physical elements but spiritual qualities and actions that allow His power and purpose to flow through us. Here are five key building materials God uses to construct His work in our lives and His church.
1. Humility
God delights in working through humble hearts. Scripture consistently reminds us of the importance of humility:
1 Peter 5:5-6 says, "God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time."
Isaiah 57:15 emphasizes that God dwells "with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit."
Humility is not self-deprecation but a proper recognition of who we are in relation to God. King Solomon exemplified this in 1 Kings 3, when he humbly asked for wisdom, acknowledging his limitations. Because of his humility, God granted him not only wisdom but also wealth and honor.
When we think we have all the answers or can handle everything on our own, God steps back. Humility keeps us dependent on Him and opens the door for His work in our lives.
2. Prayer
Prayer is foundational to everything God builds. Jesus emphasized the power of persistent prayer in Matthew 7:7-11, encouraging us to ask, seek, and knock. God delights in our dependence on Him through prayer.
In Luke 18, Jesus told the parable of the persistent widow, illustrating the importance of bringing our requests to God repeatedly. Unlike the unjust judge in the story, God is eager to answer our prayers.
Prayer is more than a ritual—it’s a partnership with God. When we humble ourselves in prayer, we invite God to work in ways we cannot. Whether it’s through personal prayer time, corporate prayer meetings, or intentional intercession for others, prayer is a critical material in God’s building process.
3. Unity
God builds through unity. The early church in Acts 2:1 thrived because they were "all with one accord in one place."Unity doesn’t mean uniformity but working together with a shared purpose.
Unity is critical in soul-winning, discipleship, and serving others. When the church comes together in purpose—whether it’s through evangelism, missions, or ministry—it magnifies God’s work. The bus ministry, outreach programs, and missions support are all examples of what can be accomplished when God’s people are united in action.
4. God’s Word
The Bible is the ultimate blueprint for God’s work. Joshua 1:8 reminds us of the power of meditating on Scripture: "This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night… for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success."
The early church devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching (Acts 2:42), and their growth reflected their commitment to the Word. God’s Word is essential for guiding our decisions, shaping our character, and giving us the tools to build effectively.
We need to make Bible reading a priority. Whether through personal devotions, group Bible studies, or church-wide reading plans, immersing ourselves in Scripture aligns us with God’s will and strengthens His work in us.
5. Faithfulness
Faithfulness is about showing up consistently, even when the task seems small or unnoticed. Jesus said in Luke 16:10, "He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much."
God honors faithfulness in every area of service. Whether it’s teaching Sunday school, participating in outreach, or supporting the church through prayer and giving, your faithfulness allows God to continue building His work.
Faithfulness isn’t about perfection but persistence. Even when the work feels mundane or unappreciated, staying faithful honors God and contributes to His greater purpose.
Conclusion
God uses humility, prayer, unity, His Word, and faithfulness as the building materials for His work. Each of these is vital for personal growth and the success of the church. Let’s commit to offering these qualities to God, trusting Him to use them for His glory. As we humble ourselves, pray fervently, unite in purpose, immerse ourselves in Scripture, and remain faithful, we’ll see God build in ways we could never imagine.
